Tomac entered the 2017 season poised to play the role of spoiler for both of his main counterparts, Ryan Dungey and Ken Roczen. His relentless determination and aggression made him a legitimate title contender, despite missing the podium at the first three rounds. Tomac went on to win 9 rounds, including a 5-race win streak, and ended up second overall, five points behind the champion.
