General FAQ
What is Monster Energy AMA Supercross?

Monster Energy AMA Supercross is the stadium season where off-road motorcycle racers test their technical skills and precision, competing over 17 rounds on custom-designed tracks to earn points toward the SuperMotocross World ChampionshipTM

What's the difference between Monster Energy Supercross and Pro Motocross?

Monster Energy AMA Supercross requires technical precision, consistency and athleticism to compete on tracks constructed inside stadiums. Pro Motocross is an off-road motorcycle race run on natural terrain, that showcases the all-out speed and endurance of the athletes. The competitors in Monster Energy Supercross and Pro Motocross are considered world class racers from an international pool of talent.

How long is a Monster Energy Supercross season?

A typical Monster Energy Supercross season consists of 17 rounds from January through early May.

What do all those abbreviations stand for?

This type of motorcycle racing carries several abbreviations. “SX” is widely used to represent the sport of supercross, “MX” for motocross, “SMX” for SuperMotocross. The two racing classes are known as the 450 Class and the 250 Class, which references the displacement (engine size) of the motorcycles. The 450 Class is considered the premier racing class, while the 250 class showcases the stars of tomorrow.

What is the SuperMotocross World Championship?

The SuperMotocross World Championship is the premier off-road motorcycle racing series where elite racers compete on the world’s most challenging tracks for the sport’s ultimate title.

There are a total of 31 SuperMotocross World Championship rounds. Monster Energy Supercross consists of 17 rounds and Pro Motocross has 11 rounds. The cumulative points from both seasons determine the competitors for the SuperMotocross World Championship. The SMX World Championship is comprised of two Playoff rounds and a World Championship Final round for more total prize money than any other off-road motorcycle racing series.

Series FAQ
How does the points system work?

Points are only awarded in the Main Events. The top finisher receives 26 points, with 23 for second, 21 for third, 19 for fourth and 18 for fifth. Sixth place receives 17 points, with each place below receiving one point less.

Points earned in Monster Energy AMA Supercross accumulate throughout the season and the rider with the most points after round 17 is the Monster Energy AMA Supercross World Champion.

Points from the Supercross season are added with points from the Pro Motocross season toward the SuperMotocross World Championship.

Which motorcycle manufacturers participate?

Supercross has seven major manufacturers on the track: GasGas, Honda, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki and Yamaha.

How different are the bikes they race from the ones I can buy?

The motorcycles raced in Supercross may look the same as the ones on the showroom floor, but the similarities end there. Completely “tricked-out” supercross bikes cost as much as $80,000 and are built from the ground up with custom components. The average fan can buy the same model motorcycle with factory standard parts for less than $10,000 at a local dealership.

How fast do the riders go? How high do they jump?

Speeds vary depending on the track, but you can expect to see competitors going in excess of 60 mph at a typical Supercross race. Riders soar as far as 70 feet in distance, while flying as high as a three-story building off of jumps called “triples.”

How old are Monster Energy Supercross riders?

Many of the top riders are between the ages of 18- 21, with professional eligibility starting at age 16. The average supercross rider is 25 years old, with a career life span that can last until their early 30s.

Who are the stars of Monster Energy Supercross?

In the 450 class, Eli Tomac, Cooper Webb, Jason Anderson, Chase Sexton, Ken Roczen, Marvin Musquin and Malcolm Stewart are some of the sports’ most recognizable names. View the full 450 rider lineup HERE.

In the 250 class, Jett Lawrence, Hunter Lawrence, Jo Shimoda, Michael Moisman and Pierce Brown are some of the sport’s athletes on the rise.

How can I get started in Monster Energy Supercross racing?

Most young riders get started at the local level, training on nearby tracks to hone their racing skills. The majority of the racers competing in the Monster Energy Supercross Championship enjoyed success on the highly competitive amateur championship series which includes the Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn’s.

What kind of safety equipment do the riders use?

All Monster Energy Supercross riders are required to wear safety equipment, including helmets, racing pants, boots, gloves and goggles. Many also use chest protectors, shoulder pads and kidney belts for added protection, and some wear neck braces to prevent spinal cord injuries.

How much dirt is needed to build a Supercross track, and where does it come from?

The Feld Motor Sports® track crew brings in roughly 500 truckloads of dirt for each contest, which equals roughly 26 million pounds. It takes a crew of seven with construction equipment about three days to build the course. The soil is stored year-round and used for various motorsports events, including Monster Jam®.
